For years I have been a passionate healthy skin care and make up advocate!
I truly think women are sticking their heads in the sand and when it comes to what they put on their face and what make up they use. I once heard a statistic that 60% more women than men get sick. If you look at the incredible list of harmful toxins below we put on out skin every day (that men don’t), you can start to wonder if we have given nature a hand in getting women sick with the most devastating illnesses such as breast cancer.
It is so easily done, a cheap mascara here, a foundation bought on the run, a lipgloss from the chemist that was on special. Or even worse, the make up counters of the big departments. Gorgeous images, flashy lights and it is expensive “so it must be good” you might think. Well… not necessarily!
In 2006 when I was heavily pregnant with my second child, I took a stand never to use any mainstream – heavily marketed with gorgeous models – extremely overpriced beauty products that I knew had toxic ingredients. And I will tell you why:
Do you really know if every ingredient your (often) expensive beauty products contain is SAFE for you to use?
Do you know where animal by-products come from? Farm animal carcasses (including all the steroids and hormones pumped into livestock), euthanised pets from vets and animal centres (including insecticidal flea collars), road kill and the entails from slaughter-houses. These carcasses are sent to rendering plants where they are boiled. The fat rises to the top, is skimmed off and sent to a purifying plant.
Who do you think is their biggest client? …. Yep …..Major cosmetic companies around the world where it is used as thickeners and expanders in most skincare, cosmetics and hair care. Unfortunately the animal fat still contains hormone altering chemicals and cancer causing chemicals. Most of your products right now in your bathroom contain animal fat. It is like a cosmetic graveyard!
Mineral oil is refined oil that is a by-product of petroleum and gasoline. It does not allow your skin to breathe. Mineral oil also keeps the good ingredients from entering your skin. It can actually even dry out your skin since it doesn’t allow hydration deep down. Imagine wrapping your entire body with Glad wrap, and then applying aloe to your skin. What would happen? The Glad wrap would prevent the aloe from getting in. This is exactly what happens with mineral oil. Mineral oil is in 98% of lotions, cleansers, creams, foundations, powders, etc. It is widely available and cheap!
Let’s talk the smell or perfume that is used in beauty products. Seriously, when you smell a bathroom when a cheap shampoo or body wash is used it stinks so heavily. It is not natural perfume, it is added chemical stuff that should not be on your skin or your family’s skin. It causes an incredible amount of allergic reactions, irritation and sensitivity. The companies that make this stuff care about their bottom line and not your health.
I thought I would show you a few images of what it means to get toxic ingredients on your skin:
