In a world of LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat it is all about how you look, your visual resume. Whether you like it or not.
Within a split second people will make up their minds about you. If they like you, if they want to hire you, if they think you can do the job, if they want to go out with you.
Your appearance is your “visual resume”. It will either create and support your reputation as a capable professional or… undermine it.
No matter how kind, intelligent, suited for the job, you are. People “believe” what they see.
So when there is a conflict between your visual resume and your actual resume on paper, people will mostly believe the evidence before their eyes.
This thought process actually has a name, it is called the “horns and halo effect”.
Here some examples, attractive people are, on average, “thought” to be more intelligent even though this isn’t proven to be true. Overweight people are “thought” to be lazy, which is not the case.

How to get dressed for Business?
Go with the flow of the business. Some industries like real estate, law and finance require a more conservative dress code that may include suit and tie.
Others like a tech start up might be more funky and relaxed look or government may be a smart casual and comfortable look.
If it is a new job, research the companies website or ask during your interview if there is a dress code. To connect with your clients you need to dress for your diary.
