How to Dress from the Waist Up And Look Effective On Video

Working from home is very real for many of you, so here are tips on How to Dress from the Waist Up and look effective in your daily video conferences.

I am not going to talk about how you need to wash your hands. I am not even going to name the bug that is affecting everyone around the globe. What I will say is that I believe in isolation and have cancelled all clients until who knows when and keeping my kids home from school.

That is keeping me super busy as I am working with both kids to get their school learning done. Year 4 and Year 8. I am enjoying this time together. Unprecedented. From timetables to creating a report on the effects of the drug Alcohol.

Family and friends in The Netherlands are a month or so ahead of us and they are all at home. The country is locked up apart from hospitals and grocery stores.

All I know, this too shall pass and I am giving you the biggest and warmest hug right now. I feel the whole world could do with some love and kindness. A good time for some self reflection.

First things first

There are a few things in video that will make your video session more effective. Sound, lighting and background. A bit like taking the best selfie, having the light (not direct sun though) behind your camera shining on your face, will dramatically change how effective you look on screen.

The busier your background, the harder your camera needs to work to transmit all the pixels. A plain white wall always works well.

Dressing From the Waist Up

You are really dressing the Vital V area you may have heard me mention once or twice before.

1. Wear Your Best Strong Colours

This is the time to bring your best colours out that make you look your best. Video is not the most flattering at the best of times and colour can be really effective in making you look great.

2. Some Patterns Work BUT Not All

Clear medium size patterns where there is a defined start and beginning to each colour, work better than blended small patterns that bleed into each other. You will often see a newsreader wear one colour. That is ultimately your most effective option. (if you have no idea what I am talking about email me)

3. Colour Block with a Layer

If you want to add a vertical colour block this can be done with a jacket that is a different colour than your top. A cardigan will have the same effect, depending who you are meeting with as it is less dressy than a jacket. You are willing the movement of the eye looking at you to move up and down (vertical).

4. Want to Wear Black

Black is usually not your best friend (only 3 of the 12 colour seasons actually have black in their colour swatch) at the best of times so if you must, then apply a little more lippie, add a nice earring or necklace.

5. Accessories Yes or No?

Yes it can look stunning on screen but be minimal with your dangling necklaces and earrings as they could be distracting. Glasses frame your face well too so if you need them don’t hesitate to wear them.
