Apart from hiding flabby arms, NOT dressing like a Mutton Dressed as Lamb (MDL) is probably the second most important goal for my Style Clients. It is usually uttered with a look of disgust that comes from deep down based on a clear memory of the last Mutton Dressed as Lamb they witnessed.
What MDL means to each woman is quite personal. It usually is something they have seen in their childhood, growing up or in their current circle of friends and family. It does not matter what image it is for you, it is real and I know it concerns a great deal of women.
I am here to help to break it down a little for you so we can keep it real:
➜ If you were not a MDL in your 20’s or 30’s it is safe to say you will not be a MDL in your 40’s, 50’s or 60’s. I have never had a Style Client give me a brief saying “I am ready to ditch my MDL look, I am over it”. But I have met loads of clients who are in a Style Rut, totally bored with their current wardrobe and literally feel they have nothing to wear.
➜ I urge you to stop judging other women for what they feel great in. It may not be what you would wear but what does it matter! Women have enough on their plate, give them a smile instead. You don’t know a person until you have walked a mile in their shoe. Instead I recommend you focus your energy on YOU. Feel great about how YOU look and focus on loving your body, every item on your body and everything in your wardrobe.
➜ If there are brands you used to love when you were younger, it is very possible that certain styles and items from that brand will still work for you. Portmans a great example of a brand that will suit many age groups as long as you know what you are looking for. Only the other day I worked with a gorgeous client who is a high school teacher, her style is elegant, chic and classic. During a Personal Shopping trip with her she loved many pieces by David Lawrence and Basque, shoes by Diana Ferrari and yet we found some of her favorite tops in Portmans she can wear from day to night.
➜ It is natural that your look evolves as you move from one age bracket to the next. We cringe when we see photos from 20 years ago and utter “what was I thinking” but really at that time we thought it looked great. Victoria Beckham is great example of an incredible style transformation. What she used to wear in her 20’s she would not dream of wearing now. But she was confident at that time (flaunting it!) and she is now as an award winning Fashion Designer.
➜ Focus on what suits your body shape and your skin tone instead of being so worried that being over 40 automatically sends you to the back of the Style Class!
➜ Slim pants and jeans are definitely not age restricted. However, you will feel more comfortable in certain cuts than in others depending on where you buy them. My tip is to go for the pair that has at least a 22 cm rise from crotch to band. If you don’t know how to measure this, have a look at an earlier article I wrote. Slim jeans you buy from Jeans West have a very different fit as opposed to Diana Ferrari. The rise is probably 5 to 8 cm lower and it will fall of your bottom. The Diana Ferrari pair has built in shape wear, a rise of at least 20 cm and stretchy material. The slim jean look is the same but the level of comfort very different.
➜ White jeans are also not age restricted. The simple rule is that light on the bottom will show more curves but if you are clever about what you wear on top it is fantastic fresh look.
This weekend I read a great article by Journalist Angela Mollard in the Sunday Telegraph. A very stylish Journalist who declared “Haters can get stuffed, I will grow old disgracefully”.
She nailed it on the head, don’t worry what other people think just do and dress what feels right to you.
Angela Mollard really gave some funny life insights!
Like the great Style Icon Iris Apfel says “Stay Interested and you will be Interesting!”
“If you’re gonna do the same damn thing all the time, you might as well jump into the box.” Iris Apfel
“If you make a mistake in what you put together the fashion police are not going to haul you into jail” – Iris Apfel, 94
